It’s common knowledge that too much sugar is harmful to the body. Over-indulging on the sweet stuff, over a period of time, can have harmful side effects. But many North Americans still down unhealthy amounts of sugar, opting for processed foods instead of the good sugars found in fruit, despite the effects. The question is: Must sugar be regulated in order to encourage consumers to eat healthy? Is this really the next step?

Well, when you think about it, sugar and unhealthy eating habits are the leading factors to deadly conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and even cancer. This is quite the burden on our bodies and our health care. Many think that regulating sugar is necessary and even overdue. Some researchers have supported this argument, saying sugar is just as bad as alcohol and tobacco in terms on its effects on the body. Mostly, the regulation will target the youth.

“Researchers propose regulations such as taxing all foods and drinks that include added sugar, banning sales in or near schools and placing age limits on purchases.” (news.yahoo.com)

What do you think of a sugar regulation? Is the government finally realizing the need to protect our health? Or are they going a little over board? Aren’t we smart enough to make better decisions without the government enforcing us?! Maybe we need that push…?
